The Annapolis Class comprised 2 ships, displacing 3000 tons, and 371 feet in length. Armament consisted of 1 twin 3"50 Calibre gun, two triple torpedo tubes and one triple "Limbo" anti submarine mortar, (the latter being removed in the mid 1980's.), as well as her CHSS 2 Sea King ASW helicopter. These ships were the first to be built from the keel up as helicopter destroyers and essentially, kept their configuration until decommissioning in the late 1990's. Both were extensively modified electronically however, with Nipigon serving as test ship for some of the components seen today in the Canadian Patrol Frigate, including the CANTASS,the Canadian Towed Array Sonar System. Nipigon is awaiting disposal in Halifax, efforts are currently underway to preserve Annapolis as a museum ship in Victoria. |
